Approaching Autism Spectrum Disorders:
The approach to autism we take is guided by our patient's history, the age of onset, and the
progression of behavioral changes. Lab tests come into play immediately upon evaluation of each
child. A "Complete Blood Chemistry Profile" and "Complete Blood Count" as well as testing
thyroid function are good places to start. These test cover the basics of general health screening
and can serve as indicator for certain nutritional deficiencies as well as specific health problems.
Other specialized tests may also be ordered at this time depending upon the child symptoms. Once
the basics are explored then we utilize specialized tests to evaluate for more specific markers of
impaired detoxification, digestive function/disorders (including infection in some cases). Heavy
metal testing can be achieved using a urinary test for heavy metal burden to see if a child has high
levels of heavy metals.
Despite the great usefulness of testing, like many other chronic illnesses and disorder, autism will
almost always involve some treatment through trial and error. This is especially true with autism
because these children tend to have variation in the way they process certain foods or nutrients,
and medications. Children with autism vary in the way they respond to treatments and diets so it is
important that we address each child as an individual.
We do not use general autism panels for each and every child diagnosed with autism spectrum
disorders. Instead we decide which tests will be the most useful to help explain symptom patterns
as well as their progression.
We do use the following tests to help guide our approach to helping each child:
General Screening
---Complete Blood Count (CBC)
---Chemistry Screen
---Lipid Panel
---Homocysteine
---Iron
Specialized Tests
---Stool testing for Bacteria and Yeast (various labs offer this)
---Urine Heavy Metals test using DMSA as the chelating agent (testing done by Doctor's Data)
---Metabolic Analysis Profile (urinary test by Genova Diagnostics) to evaluate for makers of
malabsorption, bacterial and fungal overgrowth in the digestive tract, neurotransmitter metabolites,
metabolic function analysis, and oxidative stress
---Celiac Disease screening
---Food allergy Testing
........as well as any other tests that are deemed necessary
