Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Chronic Fatigue
For those suffering from chronic fatigue our goals is identify the cause of your fatigue if possible and treat
you accordingly. There have been only a few cases of chronic fatigue in which a cause was not identified.
Even in cases in which we are not able to directly find a cause, we are most often able to provide treatment
to improve our client's energy and quality of life.
The overwhelming majority of our clients suffering from chronic fatigue have an underlying cause which we
were able to identify with a through history and performing comprehensive lab tests. Common reasons we
discover to be at the root of someone's fatigue are the following or even combinations of the following:
1. Thyroid disorders (Hypothyroid or even Hyperthyroidism)
Hypothyroidism is often overlooked by doctors for two reasons:
1) The doctor fails to take into consideration a patient's symptoms and relies
only on the results of the lab tests.
2) The doctor has only ordered basic screening tests to rule out thyroid problems;
typically the TSH is used as the primary determinant of a diagnosis of
hypothyroidism. The problem with this is that the "normal" range for TSH
values is not stringent enough, nor does it take into account those who have
hypothyroidism due to antibodies which interfere with normal thyroid function.
We have numerous cases in which someone will have a perfectly normal TSH
yet they have symptoms of hypothyroidism and test positive for thyroid
antibodies. These patients see great improvement in their symptoms when
given thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
2. Anemia:
Whether it is due to iron deficiency or due to Vitamin B12 deficiency, anemia can
be diagnosed with a standard blood tests. In the case of iron deficiency, it is
commonly missed due to the failure of the doctors to order a serum ferritin test.
We see it quite often, and the treatment for anemias is very easy.
3. Chronic Epstein Barr Infections:
The Epstein Barr virus is the same virus that causes Mononucleosis (aka "Mono").
Some individuals suffer from a chronic recurrent forms of this virus. Aside from the
typical chronic fatigue picture, these patients will often complain of severe debilitating
fatigue following exertion, anything from climbing stairs to running errands). Following
such exertion, they often will be bed ridden for anywhere from a day to a couple of days
to recover.
4. Adrenal Fatigue:
The adrenal glands are responsible for making hormones which include cortisol and
adrenaline. Cortisol is the primary hormone that your body produces in response to
stress. You need cortisol to function and to live, without it you would die. The problem
which arises with adrenal fatigue is where the adrenal glands are no longer able to
produce enough cortisol to provide the energy you need. This is often the result of stress
throughout the course of months or even years. With low cortisol, your body will feel
fatigued. Low cortisol can also put a greater demand on your thyroid gland to increase
your metabolism. Cortisol also affects the sex hormone production.
On the other hand, you can also suffer from elevated cortisol, in response to a lot of stress,
yet your body may not respond to it and you may still feel fatigued. For these people
they exhibit an resistance to cortisol, just as those with type 2 diabetes can not properly
respond to insulin despite their insulin being high.
5. Hormone Imbalances:
Low amounts of progesterone can cause fatigue. The reason being is that progesterone
serves as the building block from which cortisol is produced. Progesterone therapy can
increase a person's energy level if their labs indicate they are in need of progesterone.
Progesterone given in the oral form at night however can cause drowsiness. In a
transdermal cream however this effect is not seen.
In cases where progesterone levels are normal, yet estrogen is very elevated (Estrogen
dominance), you may also see symptoms of fatigue.
