Natural Thyroid Treatment:
Natural thyroid treatment most often involves the use of bioidentical thyroid hormones such as those found
in Armour Thyroid, Naturthroid and other glandular forms of thyroid medication.  For those whose bodies
do not produce enough thyroid hormone (hypothyroid), the easiest, and cheapest solution is to give them
the hormone which their body is not producing.

Frequently asked questions:

1.  Why is natural thyroid medication better than other prescriptions:
Most of the natural thyroid preparations are a combination of T4 and T3.  T3 is the
active from of thyroid hormone.  T4 is converted to T3 to become active.  Synthroid
(levothyroxine) is strictly T4, without the T3.  Some patients with hypothyroidism
respond to the natural thyroid better because their body does not need to convert T4 into
T3, which can be a problem for a small proportion of patients.  At the same time some
patients do just fine on Synthroid.

2.  How do I know if I have hypothyroidism?
At your doctor's visit, your doctor should ask you about symptoms related to
hypothyroidism.  If they suspect that hypothyroidism is a possibility, they will
most likely run a TSH test.  The TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone test) is
measurement of your thyroid function.  If they are thorough, the doctor may also
test for thyroid hormones and thyroid antibodies.

3.  I have all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, but my doctor tells me my
    thyroid function is fine!
My first question as a doctor is, what is your TSH reading.  The fact is that most doctors
will only diagnose hypothyroidism if their TSH is "out of range."  The fact is that the
normal range is quite variable.  We have seen many patient's whose TSH is "normal" yet
they have al of the symptoms of hypothyroidism.  We will often test for thyroid antibodies
which can be diagnostic of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (an autoimmune thyroid condition).  It
is not unusual for these patient's to have a TSH in the normal range yet they are obviously
hypothyroid based on their symptoms as well as their elevated antibody levels that show
     up on their blood test.

4.  If I am diagnosed with hypothyroidism, will I have to take medication for
    the rest of my life?
In the overwhelming majority of cases, the answer is "yes."  There are a few cases where
thyroid function may be restored by removing interfering factors to normal thyroid function such as:
heavy metals, elevated cortisol, exposure to excessive amounts ofchlorine, flouride or bromine
 .
Our approach:
  •  Listen to our patients and take into consideration both your symptoms as well as your
          lab results.

  •  Provide thyroid hormones when indicated.  If someone has a preference of one form of
thyroid hormone over another, we are open to your preference.
Some of our patients have religious objection to pork products or are vegetarian, there
medications such as Synthroid (T4) and Cytomel (T3) which are not pork derived
hormones like the natural forms are.

  •  If it turns out that your thyroid is not the problem we will look into other possible
contributing factors responsible for your symptoms.
